Maryborough shoppers can help make a difference to the environment by making a simple purchase at their next supermarket run.

Unilever Australia, manufacturers of household products such as Rexona, Dove, Omo and TRESemmé, have partnered with Coles to support Clean Up Australia’s efforts to motivate the next generation to care for the planet.

Unilever is donating $150,000 to the environmental conservation organisation, which will help update online lesson plans on Cool.org used by teachers to educate students on key topics such as the importance of cleaning litter, disposal of waste and the circular economy.

The donation will also be used to supply up to 1000 free clean up kits to schools across the country.

Unilever Australia and New Zealand, head of country, Nick Bangs said taking care of the environment was a high priority for the company.

“From pristine beaches to lush rainforests, Australia has some of the most beautiful landscapes, and we want to keep it that way,” he said.

“We’re taking actions across our business to reduce our environmental impact — from redesigning our packaging to use less plastic and using renewable energy to reduce our emissions.

“But we can’t do it alone and educating our future generation about protecting and conserving the environment will be essential to galvanising a more sustainable future for us all.”

Maryborough residents can help support the campaign, as any purchase of Unilever’s participating products at Coles before Tuesday, May 28 will provide 10 cents to the total donation.

Clean Up Australia CEO, Jenny Geddes said the initiative, which is in its fifth year and has helped donate over $400,000, is a great way for locals to support the environment.

“At Clean Up Australia we often talk about the small steps individuals can take to help improve the environment. With this wonderful campaign, it’s a matter of small 10 cent donations adding up to something big and impactful,” she said.

“This donation is critical to the work we do.It will both help us to educate our future generation on sustainability practices and enable Australians to continue to get out and take positive, practical clean up action to improve our environment any day of the year.”

The campaign coincides with the lead up to World Environment Day on Wednesday, June 5, an annual United Nations international day aimed to spark positive change in the effort to protect and restore natural environments.
