A Dog’s Delight reaches Avoca

Over 500 dogs are ready to run loose across Avoca, but instead of barking and growling at residents, these picture pups intend to bring happiness to the community.

While the thought of over 500 dogs running wild across the community would put many residents into a state of fear on paper, Avoca Primary School arts teacher Suzanne Blackie and Avoca Community Arts and Gardens president Hugh Forster are expecting the Who Let The Dogs Out? program to enthral the community.

A pack of cute canines have already been spotted at Gallery 127’s newest exhibition titled Dog’s Delight.

Avoca Primary School has been named responsible for the escape of the furry friends, with artworks in the latest showcase created by grade one and two J class students.

According to Avoca Primary School art teacher Suzanne Blackie, students are thrilled to see their hounds run loose.

“The grade one and two J students are beside themselves, they are so excited about it all,” she said.

“They feel like they have a voice and want to show the community what they can do.

“It puts kids in the local limelight for a different reason besides sport.”

From the gallery, the pack intends to spread around the school and into numerous local businesses, which is sure to make residents ponder the program’s name, Who Let The Dogs Out?

Like the ant infestation that emerged in the community last year as part of the Find an Ant project, all students at the local school have created a dog to be placed on walls throughout town.

“There will be a scavenger hunt, they are going to be on the silo, in businesses, it’s for the community to feel involved and it’s a bit of fun before Christmas,” Ms Blackie said.

“Hopefully every week there will be more dogs running loose around Avoca and it will be throughout the school holidays right until the end of January.

“We are so lucky with all the businesses who are behind the school, they want to be a part of it which is great.”

The latest art initiatives are a part of the partnership between the school and Gallery 127, who also hosted the Hart’s sixth Sense: Landscapes exhibition displaying the talents of local grade six students.

Avoca Community Arts and Gardens president Hugh Forster said residents have been very receptive to the collaboration.

“The public [reception] on the first exhibition was fantastic, I had many visitors come up to me and say how it was a wonderful thing for the community and the amazing creative talent the community has got,” he said.

“We wanted to get closer to the school so that when the school thinks of art, they think of us as well, whether we can do things here or assist in their programs.

“We intend to do four exhibitions every year to give every child a chance to showcase their work at Gallery 127.”

The Dog’s Delight exhibition will run at Gallery 127 until Monday, January 27, 2025. The gallery is open Friday to Monday from 11 am to 4 pm.
