It is becoming clearer by the week that A reserve looks set to be a five-team contest after round four’s play.
Colts Phelans V Natte Yallock
Colts Phelans ended Natte Yallock’s unbeaten run thanks to a 22-run victory in what was a game full of momentum swings.
Natte had the early ascendancy after removing Peter Egan, Graham Taylor and Robert Tatchell with the score on 53, but Dean Walker’s 67 and Dan McGregor’s 42 helped shift things in favour of Colts.
Walker’s total moved him to the top of the runscoring charts.
When both were removed, it triggered a collapse, with Colts losing their final six wickets for 15 runs.
Trent Mortlock took 3/30, while brother Zac took 2/33.
The Swans were behind the eight-ball early when they lost the wickets of Ben Williams and Jarrod Gollop without scoring, but Zac helped get the Swans back on track.
Together with Trent, the two helped Natte recover to 3/83. Zac, however, was removed on 46, and when Trent departed for 57, Natte were 6/121, and couldn’t salvage the game, eventually finishing on 9/156.
Taylor was in the thick of the action, taking four wickets and a catch, while McGregor finished off a good day’s work by taking two wickets.
MKM V Maryborough
Maryborough took the points in a local derby at Mr Mobility Oval.
Batting first, Maryborough made a strong start thanks to James Scott’s 24 and Bradey Tranter’s 28, but when Tranter was removed, it set off a collapse which saw them lose six wickets for 25 runs.
Troy Bursill’s 29 and Lalit Kanojia’s handy 15 at the bottom of the order helped them recover to 158 all out off 34.2 overs.
Tristan Tack took 3/26, while Bradley Reeves took 2/31.
In response, MKM were able to recover from a shaky start to sit 2/42, but the removal of Craig Horner for 18 and Tack for 22 helped shift the game Maryborough’s way.
Daniel Petter was in the thick of everything for the Owls, taking three wickets, two catches and also running out Tack.
The Mill ended up batting out their innings, but fell 53 runs short, scoring 9/106.
Petter’s 3/24 was key, as was Kris Bagley’s 2/12 and Oliver Cassidy’s 2/14.
Talbot V Beaufort
Talbot continues to entrench themselves as a big A reserve contender with their third straight win to start the season.
A key strength of the Yabbies has been the ability for many players to play their part in scoring runs, and this time, it was reigning player of the year Jack Kenden’s time to shine, top-scoring with 42.
In his first appearanceof the year, Karl Gunther also scored well with 37, while Lachlan Roche’s late 34 and Lachlan Griffiths’ 27 also provided some handy runs towards the end.
Dan Quixley was outstanding for the Crows, and finished with figures of 5/32.
In response, Andrew Grant continued his stellar season with the willow, top scoring with 39, while Richard Stokes’ 27 and Malcolm Woolley’s 22 were also handy innings.
But Kenden and Roche were dominant, taking four wickets apiece to help bowl the Crows out for 119.
Kenden took 4/24, while Roche finished with 4/32.
Carisbrook V Clunes
Clunes scored a dominant 144-run victory over Carisbrook, with Muhammad Shehzad playing a starring role.
With Carisbrook bowling first, Jude McGuire went nuts, scoring 87 and playing a big part in a 129-run partnership which helped the Magpies recover from a 3/26 start.
Lachlan Morganti also scored well, making 51, while Shehzad finished unbeaten on 46.
A fill-in was responsible for Carisbrook’s wickets, taking 4/34, while Jarryd Coghlan (2/43) and Elliot Cullinan (2/46) fought hard.
In response, Brad Stevenson did all the heavy-duty work in the early stages, taking the Magpies’ first three wickets, but it was Shehzad’s day, taking season-best figures of 5/17 off his eight overs as the Magpies completed a dominant day.
Stevenson, for his part, finished with 3/19, while Brian Knight top-scored for Carisbrook with 33.
Play returns next week for the fifth round of the A reserve competition.
