Actors take to stage
While the tale of Cinderella has been retold and reinterpreted a number of times, no one has done it quite like the Moonambel Community Theatre Company (MCTC).
Barring pumpkin carriages, evil stepsisters and a royal romance, MCTC’s rendition of the popular fairytale will include a fresh “hysterical” take for audiences to enjoy this weekend when the company presents its latest play.
Following the success of its Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime in 2023, the theatre group swapped their costumes for thinking hats and began brainstorming ideas for their next production.
All it took was one member becoming “obsessed” with a “new version of Cinderella”.
Marnie Wilmore spent months housing different characters in her head, finally executing her vision on paper as she wrote each scene.
“I drove to and from work making up the songs for it, singing them out loud like a complete nutter until I had finished it,” Ms Wilmore said.
“I gave the finished play to the theatre group to see if we could possibly give my version of Cinderella a try and the group agreed.”
Ms Wilmore, now the director of the upcoming show, said going from paper to stage has been a group effort.
“Everyone is volunteering their time and talents to the show,” she said.
“From the props to the scenery and the costumes, everything has been hand made by our members.”
In anticipation of this weekend’s performance, Ms Wilmore hoped the wider community would come out in support of the company.
“[It will] give the people in town and the shire an opportunity to escape their own reality for a moment and join us as we indulge our creativity,” she said.
“Hopefully the show we put on will be well received and the people of the region will get to know that when they come to see one of our shows, they will always be rewarded with a great time.”
The MCTC’s Cinderella will run for two days — October 26 at 8 pm and October 27 at 4.30 pm, at the Moonambel Hall located on 14 Woods Street — tickets cost $10 and can be purchased by contacting Steve Lane on 0419 548 214.
