A project involving local artists, school students and community in Avoca has been completed — adding a splash of colour and vibrancy to the front of the Avoca Swimming Pool.

Three murals were officially unveiled at the pool late last month, made up of artistic depictions of what Avoca looks like and means to Avoca Primary School students.

Initiated by the Avoca Friends of the Pool group in January, the project saw a number of local artists coordinate with students to build the murals which not only add some colour to the front of the pool building, but give young people a sense of ownership of the facility.

Avoca Friends of the Pool’s Joan Quinlan said the finished murals speak volumes about the character of the town.

“I think everyone is really happy with how the murals came together, they show how our young people see their town and what’s important to them,” she said.

“This project was an opportunity to bring our community together, we had young people working with artists for the murals which is a fantastic thing.”

One of the artists involved in the project, Brian Armstrong, spoke highly of the project and how it brought residents from all walks of life together.

“I was very happy to be involved in this project and I’d like to thank the children who were involved in this project,” he said.

“It was a wonderful experience to work with students and other artists to bring this all together.”

Pyrenees Shire councillor and Avoca resident Ron Eason congratulated all involved.

“It’s efforts like this that show the Avoca community in one of its best lights, where we’re working together to improve the town and community,” he said.

“These murals are a wonderful effort from everyone concerned and the artists who took the work of students to build these murals, well done.

“Congratulations to all involved on this corroboration and the efforts of everyone.”
