Avoca’s signature wine barrels on High Street have been damaged following an incident on Monday morning caused by a driver’s failure to obey road rules for turning.

The crash occurred around 5 am yesterday after a black Holden Captiva, travelling south on Avoca’s main street alongside a truck, turned right onto Pyrenees Highway (towards Ararat) from the left lane — coming in the way of the truck, according to authorities.

Police said that in an attempt to avoid hitting the two-occupant car, the truck veered off the road and crashed into the barrels and signposts.

While no one was injured, Avoca Police Leading Senior Constable Aidan Lemay said the event could have been deadly.

“We have noticed a lot of people are turning across from the wrong lane and it’s extremely dangerous as this collision has shown us,” he said.

“It could’ve resulted in a fatality — it’s really important for people to turn from the correct lane because incidents like this are easily avoidable.”

Although investigations are ongoing, police have confirmed the driver of the car is at fault and will likely receive an infringement notice for the same.

Police say the driver of the car was at fault for the accident.
