Avoca narrowly avoided damage to their clubrooms following the flood event on Thursday night, but football club president and cricket club secretary Bill Drummond said it shouldn’t put a dampener on round one preparations for cricket.
The floods saw the club take damage to fences both outside and inside the surrounds at Avoca Public Park, but that was the extent of their damage, with a club statement on Facebook saying that “luckily it didn’t make it into the clubrooms, but it was knocking on the door”.
Drummond said that there was plenty of relief, but was looking to ensure that there would be more preparation ahead of the prospect of more rain this week.
“There was definitely a lot of relief. Once it gets into the clubrooms, that’s where the costs starts to accrue, with the fridges and the electrics and that type of stuff. There has been a small levee across the front to protect the ground a lot more, but it doesn’t prevent our fence, our assets and sheds, but once it gets to the clubrooms it’s a different scenario,” he said.
“Everything that was in our storage shed — our bus, trailer and the cricket club stuff, including our bowling machine, was moved prior, so we’ve done all the preparationswe can. If there is any concerns on Thursday, we will look to sandbag to keep all the water out.”
Avoca Cricket Club begins their season in A reserve on October 29 against MKM, yet despite all the rain in recent days, Drummond believes the ground will still be able to be prepared in time for that game. “We’ll hold off on cricket preparations for now — it looks like there is more rain coming this week, so we’ll clean the debris after that and repair the fence. There shouldn’t be any concerns for round one,” he said.
