The best-kept street in Maryborough last year was Peel Street, and the Central Goldfields Shire Council has now put up a sign at the corner of Gladstone Street to mark the award.
The Maryborough and District Garden Club gives an award each year for the best-kept street in each of the shire’s five main towns and the council depot makes up the street signs.
The award is made as part of the garden club’s annual garden competition.
Judges consider the general appearance of the street, looking for front gardens that appear well-cared-for, as well as well-trimmed verges and well-maintained street trees.
When presenting the garden competition awards last December, mayor Liesbeth Long praised the garden club for running the competition.
She said that, by drawing attention to private gardens, the garden club gives encouragement to residents of the shire who care for their local environment.
At the same time, the garden club also values the ongoing work of council’s outdoor team, and it is no coincidence that many of the best streets each year include a council-maintained park or green space.
Council staff and contractors are maintaining these public spaces to a high standard, and in doing so they encourage everyone to make lovely private spaces as well.
