Fresh off getting to show their wares at Princes Park, the Maryborough Soccer Club will have the opportunity to prove themselves at home against the early front-runner in the competition, the Vikings.
The blue-and-whites’ opponent this week has already established itself as the class of the field early on in the Ballarat District Soccer Association season, scoring 23 goals, while conceding four of their own.
That included a dominant 10-1 victory over Creswick last week, a result which allowed them to maintain top spot on the ladder.
As a result, Maryborough will no doubt be wary of the scoring power the ladder leaders possess.
For their part, Maryborough defended quite well last week for long stages of their game against Ballarat, and realistically, it was Ballarat’s ability to take advantage of gilt-edged chances which allowed them to power away to a 3-1 win.
However, Maryborough have been very competitive in a large bulk of their games so far this season, with their 7-0 loss to Ballarat North United their only defeat by more than two goals.
Should Maryborough prove to be competitive against the best team in the competition, it will be another step forward for Jack Schafer and his charges.
Maryborough’s under 14s will be hoping to rebound from their loss to the red-hot Ballarat Red when they take on the third-placed Vikings in the curtain-raiser on Sunday.
It will be an opportunity for the blue-and-whites to rebound after three tough games, which has seen them concede 30 goals.
The under nines will take to Coronation Park this weekend, with Maryborough Blue to host Daylesford and Hepburn United, and Maryborough Gold to host Ballarat White.
