Tuesday was moving day in the midweek pennant, with a number of teams making big moves to enhance their credentials.
The biggest move came from Maryborough Golf, who upset Dunolly Blue 62-58 to give the season a new urgency, and now sit just 16 points behind the ladder-leaders with a game in hand.
Harold Patullo’s 22-16 win over Roy Pickering gave Maryborough Golf a margin which was extended thanks to Liz Bucknall’s 21-20 win over Alan Weir. White Tony Galofaro took two competition points for his 22-19 win over Kort Gay, it was not enough to overhaul Golf.
Carisbrook broke their drought for the season and moved from last to seventh courtesy of an 86-42 win over Dunolly Gold.
Sydney Pearson’s 41-10 win over Heather Weir helped set up Carisbrook, who then took the remaining two rinks, with Denise Matic defeating Wayne Stephens 24-12, and Phillip Burt defeating James Smith 21-20.
Highland Gold moved to fifth courtesy of a strong 77-46 win over Avoca.
They were able to take a clean sweep of the morning’s play, with Dennis Prosser defeating Ann Loosmore 21-19, while Jeanette Oliver defeated Loralee Field 27-15. Greg Shay finished off the job with a 29-12 win over Rebecca Zeuschner.
Talbot made good use of their game in hand over Highland Tartan to move on level pegging in third with a 71-46 win over Newstead.
It was a clean sweep for Talbot, with Barb Crossley defeating Brian Daly 21-16, while Matt Vernon defeated Mark Leckey 25-16. A 25-14 win by Ray Prentice over David Cobden gave Talbot a comfortable win.
Highland Tartan had the bye for round six.
An intriguing round seven sees the top four all play one another.
Dunolly Blue will be desperate to avoid back-to-back losses when they host Highland Tartan, with the winner potentially assuming top spot on the ladder.
However, Talbot, in third, are well-poised to strike. They do have a difficult assignment, with Maryborough Golf, fresh off their best win of the season so far, looking to make another big statement at the Talbot Bowls Club.
Avoca will look to get back on track and remain in touch with the top four as they host Carisbrook, while in a clash of the bottom two teams, Newstead will look to get back on the winners list as they travel to Dunolly Gold.
Highland Gold will have the bye.
