Stamp aficionados and vendors are set to flock in to Maryborough this weekend for the annualphilatelic fair, where collectibles worth a fortune will be up on display.
Having posted success last year, the Maryborough Stamp Club is getting ready to once again host its popular stamp exhibition on October 28, with the event featuring a free valuation for stamp holders this time around.
More than just a means to mail a letter, postage stamps hold within their rectangular boxes a multitude of stories and art — with the valuation service helping people uncover the history of their stamps to determine their value.
“Stamps are the best form of education,” the club’s member Paul Bussey said.
“We know there’s a lot of people in town who might have collections or stamps lying around and don’t know what they’re worth.
“Many people collect stamps as a way of investing money as well and with time the value of some stamps may go up so we’re offering this service to let people know what they are in possession of.”
On the day, nine stamp vendors will set up shop alongside a couple of dealers also selling coins for people to buy.
“I think it’s quite exciting — last year was great and this one will follow in its steps too,” Maryborough Stamp Club president Steve Greenwood said.
“You never know what people are going to bring and it can surprise you. Besides stamps, some bring in paperwork from the early Maryborough days.
“No one know what’s going to come in and it also brings people together for a chat while being able to see the collection others have acquired — it’s great.”
In 2022, the stamp fair was attended by around 70 enthusiasts with organisers expecting more attendees this Saturday.
“We’re moving the event to a bigger hall this year so we are hoping to get a lot of people,” Mr Greenwood said.
“I am also hoping that some people might decide to join our club because we’re very sociable.
“The community should come, enjoy, have a look around and maybe even get involved.”
Maryborough’s free to attend stamp fair will take place this Saturday, October 28 at St Augustine’s Primary School gymnasium from 9 am to 2.30 pm — light refreshments will be provided for a small cost.
