CARISBROOK 6.13 (49) def by TRENTHAM 8.8 (56)

In terms of season-defining games for Trentham, they don’t come much bigger than defeating Carisbrook at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.

But for the Saints on Saturday, that was exactly the case, and it was a response that they needed after they were well-beaten by Dunolly last week.

That response couldn’t have been more impressive — even if it did take some time for the Saints to ease their way into the game.

In wet conditions, Carisbrook were able to get the jump, kicking three goals to one in an impressive opening quarter to take an 11-point lead into the first change.

However, the game started to open up for Trentham in the second term, and they were able to get back on terms gradually. They kicked three goals for the quarter, while Carisbrook added two, to close the gap to seven points at the main break.

Both teams turned up the wick in the third term as the pesky rain continued to leave conditions deteriorating.

Carisbrook most certainly had their opportunities to perhaps put the game away in the third quarter, but could only manage one goal from seven scoring shots, while Trentham fared a little better, kicking two goals from five shots. That left the Redbacks four points to the good at the final change.

The last quarter was a beauty, with both teams fighting incredibly hard to secure the win, and the pressure from both teams showed how much they wanted a crucial victory.

Trentham perhaps enjoyed the better of the territory, and were rewarded early in the term with a brilliant snapped goal through Edward Fanning to give the Saints the lead.

Carisbrook continued to push for the win, but could only manage two behinds, with the game heading towards an exciting conclusion.

With the ball inside the Saints’ forward 50 late in the game, Alister Ferrier drew a free kick for too high as the siren sounded with Trentham up by a point, sparking scenes of jubilation for the Saints.

Ferrier added to the celebrations by putting through a goal on the siren, with Trentham moving into the top four at the Redbacks’ expense.

Joel Cowan was terrific for the Saints, putting together a complete performance in the middle, while Jake Keogh was also brilliant alongside him. Bryce Hinneberg, Stefan Lendrec, Harrison Knight and Hugo Hall also played well and were named in the best for Trentham.

For Carisbrook, Darcy Bond was excellent in defence, and was awarded the medal for best on ground as the Redbacks honoured club legend Harold Mason with the memorial round in his honour.

Jackson Bowen and Brady Neill worked together well in the ruck, while Andrew Toan, Cohen Leech and Cooper Tatchell were also named in the best for the Redbacks.
