Dunolly’s The Welcome Record has secured Best Community Newspaper of the Year at the Community Newspaper Association of Victoria annual awards.

The volunteer-run paper took out the top gong in a category of 20 other community papers, and was a finalist in the Best Editorial Comment for their International Women’s Day content.

Welcome Record editor and president Angela Ang said she was thrilled the paper was shortlisted for the Best Newspaper award, and shocked when she realised they’d won.

“Surprise would be an understatement when eventually reality set in that we had indeed won Best Newspaper of the Year,” she said.

“To be judged by our peers as the best newspaper when we nearly closed mid-year is not only a celebration of our work but an endorsement of every refocus and change we’ve implemented — how it looks, reads and what it covers from setting fixed, regular pages, a new re-design, creating our own local content firmly based on our community and creative use of white space and colour.”

Ms Ang said this is the first time The Welcome Record has won newspaper of the year.
