Maryborough Blazers’ men’s and women’s teams will be returning to the court, but will have to make do with a new opponent this weekend following the devastating floods inundating Victoria at the moment.

The Blazers were set to do battle with Mildura and Echuca this weekend, but with Echuca impacted heavily in particular, the Country Basketball League (CBL) have revamped their fixture and postponed some upcoming games.

It now means that the Blazers will be playing the Bacchus Marsh Lions at Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre on Saturday night, with the Blazers undefeated following their round one wins in both men’s and women’s divisions, while the Lions are looking for their first win in the men’s division, and have split their two games in the women’s.

The Lady Blazers made a statement in round one, putting up an even 100 points in their victory over the Macedon Ranges Rockies, with their bigs putting up great numbers — Maddison Egan led the way with 27 points, while Claire Blower also scored 25 points. There were great contributors across the board, with Millie Cracknell, Keisha Tonzing and Claire Constable also scoring in double-figures.

They should feel confident of getting another victory against the Lions, who have averaged 58 points in their two games so far, including being held to just 48 points in round one against the Bendigo Braves.

The men’s team started strongly thanks to two good victories over the Macedon Ranges Rockies and Castlemaine Cannons in round one.

Strong performances from new recruit Rhys Brown, who averaged 18.5 points in both games, Matt Johnston (17 points per game) and Lachlan Drummond (15 points per game) propelled Maryborough to both wins, with their ability to create three-point shots standing out.

Despite losing both of their games, the Lions will prove to be a formidable opponent this weekend. They were able to remain competitive against the Bendigo Braves, losing by eight, while just going down to the Rockies by three points two weeks ago.
