The Maryborough Blazers face their biggest test this weekend, with a trip to Melton Thoroughbreds on the horizon for both men’s and women’s teams.
Nevertheless, it’s a challenge the Blazers and Lady Blazers are prepared to accept, with both teams undefeated after four rounds of the Country Basketball League (CBL) season.
They were both successful in sweeping aside Bacchus Marsh last week, with the Lady Blazers taking a strong 89-49 victory, while the men’s Blazers had a bit of a tougher time of it, but still able to come away with a 77-65 win.
Much of the Lady Blazers’ start to the season so far can be attributed to the strong form of their frontcourt, with Claire Blower and Maddison Egan dominating in the paint. Blower has averaged an impressive 26.5 points per game to start the season so far, while Egan has also performed well offensively, averaging 20.5 points per game.
Blower was at her very best against the Lions, top scoring with 28 points to lead the way for the Lady Blazers.
However, there has also been some very impressive performers in the Lady Blazers’ backcourt as well, with Keisha Tonzing and Claire Constable able to generate scores themselves — combining for 31 points in their victory over the Lions.
Their opponents, the Melton Thoroughbreds, have enjoyed a strong start to the season, currently boasting a 3-1 record. They will be looking to bounce back following a 65-74 loss to the Kyneton Lady Tigers last Sunday.
In the men’s division, it looms as an early season preview of what might be to come at the deep end of the competition, with both teams currently unbeaten after four rounds — with Melton boasting a 4-0 record and a marauding percentage of 177, while the Blazers have been able to get the job done in all three games they have played for a 3-0 record.
Their victory over Bacchus Marsh wasn’t perfect, with the Lions mounting a second half charge, but the Blazers were able to put up enough of a gap in the first half to ensure they would be able to take another win.
Much of the victory could be attributed to Brady Neill, who was super impressive with 23 points, including three threes. His ability to create his own shot was crucial to the Blazers getting their win, while the likes of Bailey Jacobs (13 points) and Lachlan Drummond (12 points) were also good contributors.
