Maryborough’s improved form saw them try to take the challenge to Ballarat North United Black on the weekend, and while an early goal helped keep the blue and whites in it, it was not to be, eventually losing 9-1.
It looked like it was going to be a long day for Maryborough when Jacob Coxall netted home in the very first minute of play, before Josh Duffy and Nicholas Johns made it 3-0 within the first 15 minutes.
But Maryborough were able to fight back for a period, and were rewarded when Nathan Leist was able to score to give themselves a foothold in the game.
But the league leaders didn’t let up, despite conceding. Johns soon completed his hat-trick in the 10 minutes that followed, before goals to Talan Flockhart and Daniel Acevedo on the stroke of half time ensured that they would lead 7-1 at the break.
Maryborough again conceded early in the second half when Johns scored his fourth goal, and in the 58th minute, Ben Ashmore made it nine for Ballarat North.
But to the blue and whites’ credit, they were able to hold down a strong defensive effort over the final half an hour to prevent the scoreline going into double figures.
Maryborough will now turn their attention to their second-last home game of the season when they host Vic Park at Jubilee Oval on Sunday.
