LEXTON (50) def by CARISBROOK (53)

Carisbrook recorded an extraordinary comeback to keep their unbeaten run alive, winning by three goals after trailing by 15 goals at the first change.

It was a big change of fortunes for the Redbacks after struggling throughout the first term as they steadily whittled down the Lexton lead, before accelerating in the third quarter to hit the front and hold on from there.

But the first quarter belonged to Lexton, with the midcourt moving the ball well and allowing Rachel Phelan and Leesa Donhardt to get good looks at goal, which were converted in kind. Donhardt scored 11 goals, while Phelan added 10. At the other end, Abbey Nalder and Andrea Schafer could only manage three apiece.

But a shuffling of the magnets from Carisbrook coach Emma Rumpff allowed the Redbacks to storm back into the game, and they added 18 goals to nine in the second term to reduce the margin to six goals, trailing 24-30 at the main break. Schafer added 13 goals, while Paige McLean scored five for Carisbrook, while for Lexton, Phelan scored eight and Donhardt one.

Carisbrook continued on their way in the third quarter as they hit the front thanks to a 17-goal quarter, while the Tigers added nine goals, with the score 41-39 in the Redbacks’ favour at the last change. Schafer continued her goalscoring spree, scoring 14 goals, while McLean added three, and for Lexton, Phelan scored six and Donhardt added three.

The last quarter was the tightest of the day as both teams sought an important victory, but it was the Redbacks who would have all the answers to Lexton’s advances, eventually winning by three goals. Schafer scored 11 goals to make it 41 goals for the day, while McLean added one goal, while for Lexton, Phelan scored eight more to make it 32 goals, while Donhardt added three.

The win is a confidence boost for Carisbrook ahead of a clash between unbeaten teams as they host Avoca, while for Lexton, they will have to recover from the one that got away as they travel to Navarre.
