B.A ROAD SERVICES TALBOT HAWKS (38) def by AVOCA (69)
Avoca were able to defeat a brave Talbot outfit by 31 goals on Saturday after taking control from the second quarter onwards.
The Hawks were well and truly up for the fight in the first term as they looked to mark their first game at home for the season with a good performance, and trailed by three goals at the first change, 13-10. Tia Skelton added four goals, while playing-coach Eleisha Phelps added six for the Hawks. At the other end, Maddy Egan scored on seven occasions, while Gina Beavis added six.
Any hopes the Hawks had of taking a fairytale upset victory, however, went in the second term as Avoca took control of the contest. Egan was as economical as ever in the goal third, adding 11 goals, while Beavis added five. For the Hawks, Phelps added six goals, while Skelton added two, as the Bulldogs midcourt assumed complete control, leading 29-18.
The Bulldogs continued to charge away in the third term, although they were still very much being made to work for it by a much-improved Hawks team. Egan and Beavis both scored 11 goals apiece for the quarter for the Bulldogs, while for the Hawks, Skelton added six goals and Phelps five.
With a 51-29 lead at the last change, both teams were hoping to run out the game well, and that was the case, with Avoca scoring 18 goals and Talbot nine. Beavis and Egan scored nine goals apiece for the Bulldogs, while Dom Roche scored seven goals and Phelps two.
The Bulldogs now face an intriguing clash with the also-undefeated Newstead, while Talbot’s tough task to start the season continues with a clash against Lexton next week.
