HARCOURT (30) def by CARISBROOK (43)

It was a vastly different Carisbrook team to the one that went all the way to the grand final last season, but it mattered little as the Redbacks took their opening round clash against Harcourt under lights.

Both teams took their time to adjust to the conditions, with the game played between the arcs in the first quarter.

Eventually, the quarter would finish as it started, with scores level on seven goals apiece. Carisbrook’s new goal shooter, Abbey Nalder, would score five goals, with Paige McLean adding two, while it was also a new-look goal circle for Harcourt, with Tegan McKay scoring five goals, and playing-coach Jess Chaplin scoring twice.

Carisbrook started making their move in the second quarter, and pulled away from the Lions with 12 goals to eight. Nalder added seven, while McLean scored on five occasions, while for Harcourt, McKay scored six times, and Chaplin twice, as the Redbacks led 19-15 at the main break.

The Redbacks continued on from their good second quarter work in the third term, and took complete control of the game. Nalder added seven goals, and McLean six, while the midcourt was doing a good job of restricting Harcourt’s ball movement, with McKay scoring three goals, and Chaplin on four occasions, with Carisbrook leading 32-22 at the last change.

The Redbacks did enough to win the last quarter and continue on their way to a good win, with Nalder adding seven goals and McLean four, while at the other end, McKay scored all of Harcourt’s eight goals for the quarter in a promising performance from the Lions’ young star of the future.

Carisbrook will now look to make it two from two when they travel to Maldon next week, while Harcourt will need to get on the winners list when they travel to Newstead for another night game.
