A fire related incident that took place at the Carisbrook Lions Club over the weekend is being treated as suspicious with the local brigade condemning the act ahead of a potentially dangerous fire season.

At around 6 pm on Sunday, the Carisbrook Fire Brigade attended the local Lions Club hall on 9 Green Street — responding to a fire that started at the garden bed located at the side of the building.

The brigade’s Captain Ian Boucher said the circumstances surrounding the incident were questionable.

“We’re putting it [down] at the moment as certainly suspicious and the police are investigating it,” he said.

“[It seems like] somebody set fire to the garden bed, it started in a dry bush in there.

“The main part of the fire was put out by a passerby — they actually grabbed a garbage bin out of the public toilets and filled it with water and stopped it from spreading to the Lions club hall itself. It was very lucky that somebody actually saw it, if it had been a couple of minutes later, the hall would have been alight as well. We extinguished the [rest] of the fire.”

Captain Boucher said the act was a cause of concern especially as the region could see fire restrictions imposed soon.

“There’s just a lot of antisocial behaviour going on around the area at the moment and it’s a bit concerning,” he said.

“It’s also certainly a worry coming up to the Fire Danger Period — [people shouldn’t] be reckless.”
