The Talbot community will be shining its brightest on Friday as the community comes together for the Light Up Talbot Christmas Festival.

Now in its third year, Light Up Talbot will see the heart of the township glowing brighter than ever, with decorative lights to adorn gardens and building fronts and live music bringing the community together.

An initiative of Talbot Action Inc (TAI) that began as a way to give back to the community following the COVID-19 pandemic, the event continues to grow each year.

Supported by a $1750 grant from the Central Goldfields Shire Council, Friday’s event will see a range of activities and events taking place in the community before finishing up with a lighting spectacle.

TAI’s Amanda Wedgewood said what started as an event celebrating community is now growing to become an annual tradition.

“Really it was a response to COVID, TAI thought it would be good to have an initiative to brighten things up a bit because it had been a very grim year,” she said.

“It was also a way to give a gift back to the people of Talbot who had been doing it pretty tough — it was very simple in the first year and the following year, but this year it’s starting to get bigger.

“We want to do something that will be a bit more permanent on the Talbot calendar and establish a tradition in the community.”

From 5.30 pm this Friday, there’ll be street performances, a barbecue run by Talbot Today Tomorrow, coffee and gelato vans in Ballarat Street, Talbot.

From 7.30 pm, live music will be played and performed at the Talbot Town Hall where entry will be a gold coin donation, with the Majellan Sisters, Sarah landy, Jason Wasley and the Ballarat Vocal Studio performing.

“While some of the music will be quite traditional, some of it will be more modern and there will be an opportunity for audience participation — it’ll be a lot of fun,” Ms Wedgewood said.

“At the end of the concert, people will walk out into a Talbot that’s been newly lit up for the occasion.

“It should be a lovely night.”

Following the live music, from 8.30 pm onwards projections and lights will be on display at the town hall, ANA Hall, RSL Hall, Senior Citizens Club and Market Square Community Garden for all to see, as well as at several private residences.
