Bowls is back with the Goldfields Playing Area midweek competition returning to play on Tuesday for the 2023/24 season, marked by clean sweeps in all four games.

Reigning premier Dunolly Blue made a strong return to the green, defeating club counterpart Dunolly Gold 75-36 at home.

Barry Mortlock led his Blues to victory 20-11 in the first rink, while Alan Weir was unphased in the second dismissing Frank Mifsud 31-9.

Tony Galofaro finished off the clean sweep 24-16 giving the dominant Blues their first win of the season.

Newstead claimed a convincing win over Carisbrook by 60 shots, taking a clean sweep on Tuesday.

Rod Jackson led his side to the first win of the day 34-6, soundly defeating Brook’s Eric Symons.

The second rink was a little tighter with Judith Cassidy making good headway, however it wasn’t enough to stop Newstead’s Mark Leckey from a 24-12 success.

Brian Daly wrapped things up in the third, 31-11 over Denise Matic, for a final winning score of 89-29.

Maryborough Golf came in hot over Highland Gold at home with a 71-38 victory.

Golf’s Kort Gay kicked things off with a 21-10 win over Marjory Shay, with his good work followed up by Harold Patullo 25-16 over Gold’s Jeannette Oliver.

Elizabeth Bucknall finalised Golf’s win with a similar score, 23-12 over Corry Moss.

Highland Tartan trumped Avoca by 18 shots in their match, 73-55.

While the Tartans came away with wins in all three rinks, Avoca stood proudly at each turn.

Gregory kicked off the wins in the first rink 28-20 over Noel Parratt, and Leanne Wallis backed that up in the second with an identical winning margin, 27-19.

The final rink was the closest, with Avoca’s Loralee Field keeping a tight lid on the Tartans, but not quite tight enough as they ran out the victors by just two shots, 18-16.

Round two will see Carisbrook take on Maryborough Golf, Dunolly Gold clash with Talbot who will enter the fray fresh after having the round one bye, an in-house battle for Highland Gold and Tartan, and Avoca will meet Dunolly Blue.

Newstead has the bye.

Saturday pennant is scheduled to begin on October 14.
