A number of clubs around the district have successfully received a share in $600,000 as a result of months of campaigning in the name of road safety.
The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Club Rewards program encourages clubs to implement measures to enhance road safety, with country clubs a sharp focus of the program.
The announcement comes amidst a tragic weekend for the Hepburn Shire, with six lives lost due to two separate road incidents.
Lexton were the biggest recipients of clubs in the Maryborough district, receiving $2800.
Talbot received $1800, while Carisbrook, Harcourt and Mary-borough received $800 each.
Lexton president Jordan Phelan outlined the importance of maintaining the road safety message at the club.
“Every little bit that we can raise goes to the upkeep of the club and its longevity, but it’s an important message for us in country sport — we know we spend a lot of time on the road, between training and game day. With our juniors and seniors, it is a massive thing for us for everyone to get home safely to and from their game,” he said.
“We try and spruik that message as much as possible. We have done that through our social networks, as well as our electric scoreboard, as well as different means, such as Road Safety Round, passing those messages on.
“We have done it heavily for the last four years, and it’s a message that is getting across. It’s something we see as important at the club with the amount of travel that we do.”
