COLTS PHELANS 9/99 def MARYBOROUGH 6/60

Colts Phelans took a 39-run victory at Hedges Oval in a game where runs were hard to come by.

Both teams came into the game with unrecognisable squads from their incredible semi-final battle earlier in the year, with both navigating a host of departures.

Colts won the toss and elected to bat, with their new-look opening batting partnership of Sebastian Borg and Rhys Wagstaff looking to play aggressive cricket from the get-go.

Borg was the first to come unstuck on seven, as he was clean bowled by Troy Hubble. That brought new recruit Dave Robinson to the crease, and he set about pushing the pace alongside Wagstaff, putting up a 35-run stand. Wagstaff was next to go, as he hit a James Scott ball straight to Lachlan Bursill to depart for 21.

Shortly after, Robinson would depart, hitting a Jacob Glen delivery straight to Mitch McClure for 15.

Maryborough would soon get the game on their terms for a bit as they introduced Jasper Trickey into the attack, which was a masterstroke.

Trickey would take the wicket of Harrison Kurzke for a duck, while Glen captured the wicket of Luke Tatchell for five when he edged a Glen delivery straight to Troy Bursill for five.

However, the rest of the innings would belong to Trickey, as he continued to go to work.

He trapped Dayne Baker in front for one, before getting the wicket of Dan McGregor as he sought some quick runs, hitting it straight to McClure at deep mid-wicket.

While Bayden Macintyre provided some very handy late runs, he too was a victim of Trickey’s excellent bowling, trapped in front for 16.

A deserved five-for was in Trickey’s sights, and he duly delivered, bowling Nick Henderson to take an early lead in the bowling statistics with 5/19.

Colts would eventually finish on 9/99, but knew they needed quick wickets to put the pressure on Maryborough immediately.

They were able to deliver, with Lachlan their first wicket off the bowling of Robinson, luring an edge straight to Tatchell.

McClure came in as he needed to put in a big innings, and alongside Jackson Goodwin, the pair were able to put 21 on for the second wicket, before the latter was trapped for lbw by McGregor for 12.

Shortly after, McGregor also had the big wicket of the game, snaring McClure by bowling him for 18.

Maryborough were left wanting, and were struggling for runs as Colts’ bowling attack was able to contain them expertly.

Sam Thomson was next to go, as he was bowled by Robinson, and Baker finished off the game with two quick wickets, bowling both Scott and Pravin Yadav.

Maryborough could only muster 6/60 off their 20 overs, as the Colts bowlers were able to find their line and length consistently.

Baker led from the front, finishing with figures of 2/3 off his four overs, while Robinson (2/10) and McGregor (2/14) also proved hard to score off throughout their four overs.

Despite their loss, Jasper Trickey provided a highlight for the Owls with a five-wicket haul. Photo: 101023 15
