Residents in Maryborough and surrounds were treated to a night of spectacular coloured displays in the sky as a severe geomagnetic storm caused aurora australis or the southern lights to appear across parts of Australia.
The extreme storm event, marked by an interference to Earth’s upper atmosphere by large eruptions from the Sun’s outer atmosphere, was the first of its kind since 2003.
