Regional Community Vet Clinic (RCVR) is set to hold another cat de-sexing day to improve health outcomes for pets and support residents who are struggling financially.
A Mount Alexander based non-profit organisation, RCVC is working towards the goal of establishing a clinic in Campbells Creek to support people experiencing financial difficulty in caring for their companion animals.
The organisation has held a number of de-sexing days already, with around 200 cats from central Victoria neutered so far and RCVC co-director James Mack said it’s creating better health outcomes for pets.
“Cat de-sexing is one of the main focuses for us, a lot of the time people talk about responsible cat ownership and having your car de-sexed is about stopping feral cat colonies,” he said.
“We’ve had some farms where there are 20-30 cats on one property, it just gets out of control and now we’re in spring, that is becoming more prevalent. The more we can get done, the bigger the impact is going to be over the next year.”
Mr Mack said beyond supporting better health outcomes for com-panion animals, the idea of the clinics was also to support pet owners.
“Our goal is to provide a veterinary care service for people who are at the dangerous end of the poverty scale,” he said.
“A lot of the time people who fall into this category can be older people or people with health issues and disabilities.
“Pets are commonly these people’s support mechanisms and with their financial burdens, we’re seeing people spending more on pet food and caring for their animal than they are on themselves.
“The clinic is for people that can’t afford to go to a vet or are worried about going to a vet because of how much it might cost.”
The de-sexing day will take place on Sunday, October 1 in Castlemaine, with organisers asking for a donation where possible of $30 for male and $50 for female cats.
Bookings are required as places are limited, with those looking to access the service encouraged to contact the RCVC on 0493 447 394.
