Maryborough will look to get their second win of the season on the board tomorrow when they play Kyneton.

The Magpies had a very tough assignment last week when they played Kangaroo Flat, and despite giving their all, were ultimately overwhelmed by the Kangaroos, going down 29-75.

Looking ahead to this week, however, the Magpies can give themselves a chance based on a quite competitive recent history with Kyneton.

There’s been a lot of bright spots for the Magpies so far this season.

The form of Tori Chandler across midcourt so far cannot be questioned — having worked hard in all three games as she controls the pace of play for the Magpies.

Abbey Nalder came into the game late against Kangaroo Flat as she continues to get some good A grade experience while also leading the line under the goal ring for the Magpies, and was able to get many opportunities thanks to good positioning in the last quarter.

Jordan MacIlwain has been adding to her goal tally in recent weeks, providing an excellent second option under the goal ring herself, while the defensive combination of Alex Williams and Finley Wagstaff battled hard against a well-drilled Kangaroo Flat unit.

The Magpies will look to put it all together this week when they take on the Tigers, having had both their games in 2022 decided by five goals or fewer.

In round nine, the Magpies were left to rue a final quarter fadeout which saw the Tigers score 17 goals to seven, as they lost 46-49.

At half time, the Magpies were up by nine goals and looking good, but Kyneton were able to turn it all around when it mattered most.

In the final round of the season, the Magpies fell behind early, with Kyneton leading by seven goals at the long break, before some positional changes saw the Magpies close in by three-quarter-time. However, with the Tigers steadying, they were able to hold off all the Magpies’ advances to take a five-goal win, 48-43.

Around the grades, Maryborough’s 17 and under team had one of their more momentous wins last weekend when they snatched a one-goal victory over Kangaroo Flat — the team that eliminated the Magpies in last year’s semi-final.

It means that the Magpies are now sitting third with a 3-0 record, and will be favoured to make it four wins in a row against the winless Tigers.
