While more than a week has passed since changes were made to the Napier and Nolan streets intersection, a significant number of motorists have continued to disobey road rules according to police.
Authorities have been actively monitoring driver behaviour, following the installation of the left turn only sign at Nolan Street — barring vehicles from turning right or going straight ahead onto Napier Street.
On Tuesday, two officers on police motorcycles spent time speaking to drivers, highlighting the changed conditions at the intersection.
“[They] saw concerning rates of noncompliance,” Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Sergeant Paul Martin said.
“This particular intersection has historically been an issue for us in terms of both injury and non-injury collisions so the measures that have been taken recently should make it much safer.
“Drivers must take steps to ensure that they are driving in accordance with the changed conditions which is no different from when driving in another town or city that you may not be familiar with — driver awareness and driving behaviour must change in order to reduce injury related collisions and near misses.”
Police will continue to actively monitor the intersection.
If drivers don’t comply with the left turn only sign, they could potentially face a $192 fine.
Similarly, driving on or over double lines carries a fine of $385 and three demerit points.
