The Central Goldfields Shire Council has awarded a road resealing contract worth more than $1 million, with councillors noting the importance of restoring flood impacted roads.

Councillors moved to award the $1.01 million contract for the 2022-2023 sealing program to Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd last week, following a public tender process in October.

According to the report tabled to council, the sealed road asset is considered as two separate assets — the road pavement and sealed surface — with the sealed surface typically having a 15-year life span while the pavement lasts between 45 to 60 years depending on stable ground conditions.

The report further states that each financial year, council allocates a portion of funding to the renewal of the existing sealed surfaces on the sealed road network, which includes around 524 kilometres of bituminous sprayed seal valued at $13.4 million, as well as asphalt seals valued at $3.3 million.

The list of roads to be resealed is developed through council’s asset management practices, the report states, which prioritises reseals based on condition data across the length of sealed roads.

While the report did not make mention of roads listed to be resealed, it did mention $27,000 of the works package was for primer sealing for Cotswolds Road and $25,000 was for final sealing of Pleasant Street and High Street.

Speaking during last week’s meeting, councillor Liesbeth Long noted the importance of maintaining the shire’s road networks.

“As a ward councillor in a rural shire, I myself am frequently travelling on our roads,” she said.

“Roads are one of those things you don’t really take notice of unless they are bad — dodging potholes and driving on surfaces that have cracks in them is unsafe, dangerous and not fun for anyone.

“The recent wet weather has wreaked havoc on our local roads and indeed, there are many kilometres of road affected.”

Prior to any resealing works being undertaken in the shire, the report states council will communicate this to affected properties and residents will be advised of road works through social media.
