Locals interested in giving back to their community are being encouraged to sign up to the Pyrenees Shire Council’s much-loved — and much-needed — community car service.
The service has been operating for around 30 years and is now on the look out for more locals to donate their time to drive residents to medical appointments at locations including Maryborough and Ballarat.
Pyrenees Shire CEO Jim Nolan said the service and volunteers are greatly appreciated.
“Our regular clients really rely on the flexibility of the service to get to their medical appointments so it’s really important,” he said.
“It’s certainly a much-loved and much-needed service and it can only operate if we have volunteers.
“At the moment we’ve got about four drivers and they’re so highly valued and appreciated — it can be quite a big time commitment. It’s so generous for people to give their time like they do.”
Mr Nolan said council have been advocating to government to attract more public transport to the region, but in the mean time the community car service is a vital one.
“In communities like Avoca, access to public transport is really limited,” he said.
“This community car service is council’s way of breaching some of that gap and we will be continuing to advocate for a greater range and flexibility around public transport options. It’s something that’s concerned council for quite a long time.”
All volunteers must be vaccinated and willing to complete a Police Record Check (paid for by council).
Induction and training is provided for all volunteers.
