Progress is being made on Lexton’s $3.8 million community hub, with the Pyrenees Shire Council now working to secure a building permit to install a sewerage system which has caused ongoing delays to the project.
After the first round of major government funding was secured back in 2018, the hub was initially scheduled to be completed in February this year but has been pushed back due to the fact Lexton is an unsewered township, which means wastewater must be treated on-site with septic systems.
Due to the size of the community hub, it requires a 5000 litre per day treatment system, which in turn required Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval.
Pyrenees Shire Council confirmed this week that the EPA has given an exemption from the need to hold a licence to run a sewerage treatment system for the hub and Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan said council is now working to secure the building permit needed to install it.
“The next steps for installing the system is getting a building permit for installation,” he said.
“Our building certifier requested more information which took some time to gather. This extra information has been passed on to the building certifier and we are hopeful a building permit will be issued soon.
“Building of the sewerage system can begin once the building permit has been issued.
“We know these delays are frustrating for our community. We are doing what we can to reduce these delays and have the building ready for our community to use.
“We’re looking forward to this asset being completed and used by our community for many years to come.”
The Lexton Community Hub will be used by the Lexton Football Netball Club, the cricket club, golf club and wider community.
Once completed it will feature a multipurpose function room, change rooms, bar, canteen and commercial kitchen.
