The Central Goldfields Shire Council nominated councillor Wayne Sproull as the board member and representative for the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance (CVGA) at last month’s ordinary council meeting.
Cr Sproull will take over the position from councillor Liesbeth Long who served in the role for two years.
“The CVGA is a network of 13 local councils working together across Central and Northern Victoria to develop and implement innovative regional projects, undertake advocacy on climate and energy policy, share knowledge and promote best practice,” Cr Long said while moving the motion to nominate Cr Sproull.
“This came about because Cr Sproull and I both have a passionate interest in climate change and indeed we were both council representatives on the climate action group that developed the Central Goldfields Shire Climate Action Plan that was adopted by council early this year.
“I found my time on the board fascinating. I’ve enjoyed seeing the progress made with its many projects and initiative.”
The alliance spearheaded projects like Community Sparks, which involved the implementation of neighbourhood batteries; the MASH (More Australian Solar Homes) program; and the Donald and Tarnagulla Microgrid Feasibility Project.
According to the report tabled at the meeting, the council’s Climate Action Plan 2022-2030 includes various initiatives in partnership with the CVGA. Being a member of the alliance and having board representation ensures that these plans are supported.
“I’ve seen the work the CVGA does and thank Cr Long for the opportunity to take over her position at the board,” Cr Sproull said.
“I look forward to working with them and keeping the focus on reducing greenhouse gases and increase resilience and adaptive capacity through projects, efficacy and knowledge.”
Appointments are set for two years and Cr Long’s expires this month. New appointments to the board will be made at the CVGA AGM scheduled for November 17.
There is also an allowance for the council’s annual membership fee of $8760 to CVGA in the 2022/23 budget.
