The 1st Maryborough Scout Group is inviting young locals to boogie under the disco ball and catch some Friday Night Fever.
Last year’s inaugural disco helped raised money to send six Scouts to a Jamboree in New Zealand last January, and 1st Maryborough Scout Group leader Ali Hinze said the event is making a return to give more Scouts life changing experiences.
“It was really awesome to see the community come in and support us, but also to see the kids have such a great time,” she said.
“There’s not a lot of great things available for our younger kids to do like this — it is really awesome to see them have some fun and have these big smiles on their faces.
“We have got 14 kids going to the Australian Jamboree in Queensland next January so we are fundraising to get them up there.
“The things that they learn while on these trips is invaluable — these opportunities aren’t available for everybody, that’s why when they come up we want to send as many kids as we can.”
Ms Hinze said extracurricular activities help develop life-skills for members such as Logan, who used these experiences to be awarded the Grey Wolf Award, the highest honour a cub scout can achieve.
“The Grey Wolf Award usually takes around three years to achieve, they have to complete tasks like going on a four hour hiking journey that they planned and organised as well as doing a personal development course,” she said.
“It is a lot of work to get to that and Logan has managed to do all that, we have had a few kids get the award but this is the first one in the last three years.
“I’m so proud of all the effort he has put in and it has really motivated other kids to strive for it as well.”
Being a scout member isn’t all about bushwalking and rock climbing, as local Scouts Caitlin and Eloise participated in the Melbourne Gang Show last month, an annual youth musical done by the Scouts and Guides of Victoria for over 70 years.
“Everything about the production was done by these kids with adults supporting, just them going and rehearsing develops a lot of skills and what a challenge to get up on stage and perform in front of everybody,” Ms Hinze said.
“Those two put in a lot of time and effort just driving down to Melbourne for all their crazy amount of rehearsals and the show was amazing.”
The disco night at the Maryborough Scout Hall is on this Friday, July 26 from 5 to 6.30 pm for kids aged five to 10 and 7 to 9 pm for kids between 11 and 14. The event is cash only with $5 entry.
