Frank Mifsud and his Dunolly Blue team have taken over top spot in the weekend bowls competition.

A full round of lawn bowls was played on Saturday.

On Saturday, the two front-runners in Division 1 met when Dunolly Blue travelled to Highland Tartan. Dunolly were able to get the win and vault to the top of the ladder as a result, with a 60-50 victory.

Rinks one and two proved to be a tight affair, with Highland Tartan winning the first rink 21-19, before Dunolly Blue hit back on the second rink, winning 20-17. In the end, it was the third rink which decided the game, with Dunolly Blue winning 21-12.

Talbot Gold kept in touch with the top two after winning a topsy-turvy match with Avoca Red which saw three different results on all three rinks.

It was a 31-8 victory on rink one which effectively sealed Talbot Gold’s win, while Avoca fought hard on rinks two and three, winning 20-19 on rink two before a 19-19 draw on rink three meant they would take home three match points.

Maryborough Golf Blue moved into the top four with an 11-shot victory over Highland Red in a hard-fought game.

Golf Blue were able to take rink one 18-14, but Highland Red fought back to tie things up on rink two, winning 20-17. However, a 23-13 victory on rink three was able to give Golf Blue their victory and 14 competition points.

Dunolly Gold took their first victory of the season, consigning Newstead Blue to the bottom of the table with a 74-37 victory.

They were able to take the sweep to ensure they would also keep in touch with the top four, now sitting just 12 points behind Golf Blue.

A 29-6 win on rink one set Dunolly Gold on their way, before 29-19 and 16-12 victories on rinks two and three allowed them to take all 16 points on offer.

In division two, Highland White overtook Carisbrook for supremacy on top of the ladder following a hard-fought 64-55 victory over Golf Gold.

A 22-16 victory on rink one helped give Highland White the edge, before they all but assured their victory with a 27-17 win on rink two. Golf Gold fought back on rink three to take two points, winning 22-15.

Carisbrook fell back to second courtesy of a shock loss to previously winless Avoca Gold, who took a 63-53 victory.

Carisbrook were able to take a 20-18 win on rink one, but Avoca Gold proved much too strong on rinks two and three, taking 19-16 and 26-17 victories to move up to fifth on the ladder.

Maldon moved to within one point of Brook on the ladder courtesy of an 87-53 win over Dunolly Green.

Maldon dominated rinks one and two, winning 37-12 and 24-15 to take an unassailable lead. Dunolly Green were able to at least take home one competition point thanks to a 26-26 draw on rink three.

Likewise, it was a very similar story for Talbot Brown in their game against Newstead White, dominating to take an 82-35 victory.

However, they fell one shot short of completing the sweep, with rink one resulting in a 17-17 draw. Nevertheless, 30-9 and 35-9 victories on rinks two and three ensured they too would take 15 competition points to keep pace with the remainder of the top four.

Round fivesees Highland Tartan looking to bounce back against Newstead Blue, while league-leaders Dunolly Blue hosts Avoca Red. Third spot is up for grabs when Talbot Gold and Golf Blue meet, while Highland Red and Dunolly Gold also clash.

In division two, league leaders Highland white travel to Dunolly Green, while Carisbrook will look to bounce back against Golf Gold. Third-placed Maldon travels to fourth-placed Talbot Brown, while Avoca Gold hosts Newstead White.
