Dunolly have moved into the top eight after a hard-fought 24-point win over Newstead.

The Eagles are soaring beyond expectations this season, now among the finals action after the weekend’s result and striving for the club’s first senior top eight finish in five years.

Neither side enjoyed the variable of some winter weather, with plenty of missed goals throughout the game which was never more than a couple of majors out of reach.

Newstead kicked 1.2 (8) to open, while Dunolly kicked 1.4 (10) in the same period.

The Eagles broke away by half time with a 20-point second term, outscoring the wayward Roos which only hit one out of six shots on goal to trail by 11 points at the main break.

Newstead managed 2.1 (13) in the third and while Dunolly had eight cracks at goal in the same time, kicked an inaccurate 3.5 (23) which gave the home side a bit of optimism ahead of the closer with 21 points the difference.

This lead came in handy for the Eagles, with Dunolly putting up 2.3 (15) to Newstead’s two goals in the closing quarter.

Adal Zuk, Connor Sheppard, Ben McKinley, Lachlan Tranter, Mitch Goodwin and Jamie Townsend were best on for Dunolly in a big win for the side, with Joel Fisher, Goodwin and Xavier Ryan leading the goal tally with two each.

Anthony Robins, Joel Smith, Harrison Harbrow, Tyler James, Dale Bott and Mason James were amongst the best for the Roos, with Dillon Hinge and James each kicking two goals.

Stead is now ranked 10th on the ladder ahead of a massively tough game with Carisbrook while Dunolly heads in as confident favourite against bottom of the ladder Maryborough Rovers this weekend.
