A blaze that destroyed a Dunolly home in the early hours of Thursday morning is being investigated, with emergency services highlighting the importance of maintaining properties into the fire season.

Emergency services were called to the two-storey home in Broadway, Dunolly after 12 am Thursday morning to reports the house was alight.

Dunolly Fire Brigade Captain Greg Humphrey said there was “no hope” of saving the house, with crews arriving to find the home fully engulfed by flames.

“The house was fully involved when we arrived, there was no hope of us saving anything,” he said.

“We were on scene for around four hours trying to control the fire and police were on scene all night.”

It’s understood the owner of the property and another individual were inside the home at the time of the incident but were able to escape and were taken to the Bendigo Hospital.

Captain Humphrey said the cause of the fire was unclear, with fire investigators on scene Thursday morning.

“It’s unclear at this stage how the fire started which is why the investigators were called,” he said.

As well as the house, the fire also damaged several vehicles parked around the property and Captain Humphrey said the incident served as a reminder for residents to tidy around their homes.

“Make sure you clean up around your property to prevent things like this happening,” he said.

“It’s also important to make sure we can get access to properties with the firetrucks, so make sure your gates are wide enough and trees are trimmed back.”
