A strong Sandhurst outfit showed Maryborough the way on Saturday, eventually winning by 60 goals.

There were some changes coming into the game, with Abbey Nalder coming into the team as goal shooter, while Keely Hare moved to goal attack, with playing coach Jordan MacIlwain on the sidelines.

Maryborough’s first quarter was their best quarter of the day, with Nalder fitting in well and shooting four goals, while Hare added three. Finley Wagstaff and Alex Williams were having a great battle with Sandhurst’s powerful goal circle.

At the end of the first quarter, Sandhurst led 17-7.

The second quarter saw the Magpies continue to fight, with Hare scoring five goals and Nalder three from limited opportunities. While the Magpies midcourt fought hard, Sandhurst were generating plenty of opportunities, and scored 19 goals to the Magpies’ eight to take a 21-goal lead into the main break.

The Dragons started to take over in the third quarter, and blew the Magpies away with a powerful midcourt display, as they added 26 goals for the quarter.

The Magpies still managed nine goals — their best of the day, with Nalder scoring on seven occasions, while Hare added two.

Sandhurst continued to pile on the goals in the final quarter, scoring on 25 occasions, and ran out the game well, while Maryborough were only able to score three times.

The 87-27 scoreline was a learning curve for the young group, which was ably led well by Tori Chandler, who fought hard in the midcourt, as well as Hare, while Nalder scored 16 goals for the afternoon.

Maryborough will now have two important games at home against South Bendigo and Strathfieldsaye which will shape their season.

Tali Chadwick looks to pass down court.
