A Brown Street, Maryborough home has been destroyed by fire.

A Maryborough home has been destroyed following a blaze on Sunday night, with emergency services issuing a call for residents to be cautious with electrical and heating appliances.

CFA fire investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire at the Brown Street home yesterday, after a blaze destroyed around three quarters of the building.

Emergency services were called to the property shortly before 7 pm and Maryborough Fire Brigade Captain Darryl Wagstaff said upon arrival, a majority of the property was alight.

“We had two appliances and a dozen firefighters in attendance,” he said.

“On our arrival, three quarters of the property was involved in the fire and it had breached through the roof, with part of the roof having already collapsed.

“The fire had also spread to the adjoining car port and destroyed a couple of mobility scooters which were stored there.”

The elderly male who lived at the property was able to escape the fire and was with a neighbour when emergency services arrived, with the blaze under control in 24 minutes.

Captain Wagstaff said while the fire was controlled relatively quickly and neighbouring properties were unaffected, it wasn’t without its challenges with the brigade on scene until 10 pm.

“We had trouble locating the street hydrant which had been covered with dirt and grass,” he said.

“We did have problems locating the buried water hydrants and also low water pressure in that area impeded our ability.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation however it appears the blaze started in the lounge area of the home.

Captain Wagstaff urged residents to be cautious with electrical and heating appliances and take steps to mitigate the risk of fire.

“We are continuing to advocate for people to be conscious of electrical and heating appliances in the home for fire safety,” he said.

“Make sure that any electrical appliance that’s not being used is turned off at the wall just to safeguard the residences.”
