Free-flowing game in Ballarat

Maryborough gave their all, but went down 6-2 in an entertaining contest at Pleasant Street to Ballarat in a game that was much closer than the scoreboard suggested last Sunday.

The blue-and-whites were very positive in the first 25 minutes of the game, and were able to generate some good chances. Julian Callea and Cooper Stephens were both through on goal, but narrowly missed, while a spectacular scissor kick from David Scofield was saved from close range.

Instead, it was Ballarat who took advantage to score two quick goals before half time to take a 2-0 lead into the main break.

Maryborough continued to ask questions of Ballarat, despite Ballarat scoring the opening goal to make it 3-0, but they had a goal disallowed after Scofield collided with Ballarat’s goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, Scofield soon got his chance and put away a good finish inside the box to give the blue-and-whites a chance at 3-1 down.

It was Ballarat’s day, however, and a 10-minute burst, led by Zach Ferrari, who scored a hat-trick, ensured they would take the three points.

Garry George scored a consolation goal to make it 6-2 after a goalmouth scramble to finish off what was a free-flowing game.

The under 14s had a difficult outing against an unstoppable Ballarat Red outfit, who were able to continue their dominant season with a 15-0 win.

The blue-and-whites will now travel to St Georges to take on Vikings this Sunday.
