Reaching for the stars and beyond, a Maryborough woman is representing the community at a national pageant — shortlisted as a finalist, she is a win away from going global.

In the running to be crowned Miss Galaxy Australia 2023, 24-year-old Rebecca Evans has been selected alongside 24 other women from across the country to compete for the title.

The finals for this year’s Australia Galaxy Pageants will be held in Sydney from May 3 to 6 where the winner from each category — Miss Teen, Miss, Mrs and Ms — will get the chance to represent the country in the United States’ Orlando, Florida at the Galaxy International Pageant.

For the local stay-at-home mum, Ms Evans, the competition is an opportunity to shine a light on regional places like Maryborough.

“Being a finalist means that I can now represent my community on a larger scale and put the spotlight on smaller communities because they often get overlooked when it comes to bigger events on a wider level,” she said.

“I just saw an ad on Instagram and I thought I had nothing to lose — I could just apply and if I didn’t get accepted that would be okay. It was worth a shot.

“After applying, I had an interview and then from there they said I’ve been selected as a national finalist to represent Maryborough and in that moment I realised this was my shot to represent such an amazing community on a bigger scale.”

The application process, Ms Evans said, was fairly straightforward — she filled out an online form and participated in a phone interview following which she was shortlisted — however, as the competition in May approaches, the anticipation is building.

“I’m really excited and nervous as well because I’ve never done anything this big before,” she said.

“It’s always going to be on my mind throughout the whole competition that I’m here on this massive stage for my small, tight-knit community.

“There’s also the women I’m competing with — I’m really nervous but I’m more excited to meet everybody and get to know them, where they’re from and what their communities are like.”

Hoping to inspire other women and girls in Maryborough, Ms Evans said taking up the challenge of something like this was a good way of getting out of one’s comfort zone.

“I definitely think that other people should apply to participate in things like this — you gain so much experience and learn about different organisations and charities,” she said.

“You also make so many amazing friends, there’ll be women from all over the country at the pageant.

“There’s really nothing to lose, it’s all about gaining more.”
