The Maryborough Giants are locked and loaded into third position at the very least after scoring an 11-goal win over Lexton away from home.

The Giants were determined to make another big statement against a well-rounded Tigers outfit, and it was a goal-for-goal first quarter which saw the Giants sneak out to a two-goal lead after scoring 14 goals to 12. Annalyse Carroll scored eight goals and Abbey Raven six for the Giants, while Rachel Phelan scored nine goals and Leesa Donhardt three for Lexton.

It was a free-flowing game for much of the first half, with both midcourts able to pass the ball with precision, and it was a terrific battle all through the court which saw goals at a premium.

Lexton, however, were able to close the gap by a goal thanks to 12 goals to 11 for the term, which saw the Giants hold a slender 25-24 lead at the main break. Phelan continued her good form in scoring nine goals, while Donhardt added three, while for the Giants, Carroll scored nine goals and Raven two.

The third quarter again saw both teams go goal-for-goal, with the margin continuing to hover around not much more than two goals. The Giants were able to extend their lead by a goal to lead 36-34 at the final change, with Carroll scoring seven goals and Raven four, while for Lexton, Phelan scored seven goals and Donhardt three.

The Giants turned the screws up in the final term, with the defensive structure allowing them to dictate the pace of play right when they needed it most, and dominating territory. As a result, the Giants would score 16 goals to seven to run away with the game.

Carroll scored 10 more goals to finish with 34 for the day, while Raven scored six to finish with 18, while for Lexton, Donhardt scored five goals, while Phelan would score two to finish as the Tigers’ leading scorer with 27.

The Giants will look to continue to storm into the finals when they host Newstead next week, while Lexton will look to bounce back from two straight losses when they host Harcourt.
