Giants survive first half fight from Roos
MARYBOROUGH GIANTS (62) def NEWSTEAD (46)
It wasn’t until the third quarter where the Giants got on top after such a spirited first half from a brave Newstead outfit, who will now have to defeat Campbells Creek next week to secure their spot in the finals.
The first quarter was an even, high-scoring affair, with the Giants taking a one-goal lead thanks to 13 goals to 12 in the opening term. Annalyse Carroll scored seven goals and Abbey Raven six for the Giants, while Tayla Gale and Bri Jury scored six goals apiece for the Kangaroos.
It was again a goal-for-goal affair in the second term, which saw the Giants having to answer all of Newstead’s challenges. In the end, the Giants would score 15 goals to 14 to take a 28-26 lead into half time. Carroll scored nine goals for the quarter, while Raven added six for the Giants, and for Newstead, Gale scored nine times and Jury five.
The resistance was broken in the third term as the Giants restricted Newstead’s ball movement through the midcourt, while taking control of the game with their movement across the court. As a result, that saw the Giants score 17 goals to six to lead 45-32 at the final change. Carroll scored 12 goals and Raven five for the Giants, while Gale and Jury scored three times apiece for the Kangaroos.
Newstead were able to gather themselves and put together a competitive last quarter, but they would be left to rue their third quarter shutdown, keeping the Giants honest with 14 goals in the last term, while the Giants scored 17 of their own.
Carroll had a good day out, scoring 12 goals in the final term to finish with 40 for the day, while Raven scored five goals to finish with 22. For Newstead, Jury scored nine goals and Gale five to see both goalscorers for the Kangaroos finish on 23 goals.
The Giants will now finish off their home-and-away campaign by facing Talbot, with the Kangaroos facing Creek for the right to make the finals.
