Maryborough’s Jake Stringer and Newstead’s Jack Ginnivan played starring roles on the big stage as Essendon took on Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon.
Stringer played a crucial role in Essendon’s 24-point victory in front of 73,805 at the MCG, kicking four goals.
With the midfielder/forward out of contract at the end of the season, it was important for him to start off on the right foot, and with hopes for Essendon to take a finals win for the first time since 2004, Stringer looms as a crucial piece to their success.
While Hawthorn are still in the rebuilding phase, their recruitment of Ginnivan has paid dividends so far, and he put together a spectacular first half to keep the Hawks in the game.
Ginnivan had 14 disposals and two goals in the opening two quarters of the game, and while he faded away late, it was an exciting glimpse of what the Hawks future, alongside Dylan Moore and young draftee Nick Watson, could provide with their pressure inside 50.
Meantime, Kai Lohmann is continuing to bide his time with Brisbane, and was again the sub in their 23-point loss to Fremantle at Perth Stadium on Sunday.
Lohmann collected five touches in the second half as he came on for Darcy Gardiner, and had opportunities to hit the scoreboard, but could only manage two behinds for the afternoon.
Stringer and Ginnivan return to action on Saturday, with Essendon travelling to the SCG to face Sydney, and Hawthorn facing Melbourne at the MCG.
Lohmann’s Lions have the bye, and will return in round three to face Collingwood.
