Maryborough will have their best chance to snap an eight-game losing streak tomorrow when they play winless Golden Square.
It’s been a torrid two months for the Magpies, not only going without a victory, but also losing by an average of 41.5 goals in the process.
With a younger team, it’s genuinely been a learning process throughout the year as an inexperienced senior group takes to the court every week, but nevertheless, the club are continuing to find positives on a weekly basis.
Abbey Nalder has been one positive, for example, as she continues to find her feet at senior level.
She scored 17 goals against Kyneton as she continued to build her on-court rapport with Keely Hare, and was trusted to be the goal shooter in the second half.
While the midcourt was outclassed by Kyneton throughout, they were able to make the most of their opportunities at goal, and went at an efficient pace.
Doing so again will be key for Maryborough to end their losing run against a Golden Square team that has not tasted success since round 10, 2021.
In their last meeting in round five, Maryborough took a 19-goal victory, scoring 73 goals in the process, a season high for the club.
Hare scored 42 goals as she proved to be too much for the Bulldogs’ defensive unit, while playing-coach Jordan MacIlwain added another 31.
The likes of Tali Chadwick and Finley Wagstaff had excellent outings, which will need to be repeated if the Magpies are to get back on the winners’ list.
In other games on Saturday, Maryborough will face a tough task to get their first win in B grade, with the Magpies losing by 30 goals to Square last time out.
B reserve will look to turn around an 11-goal loss to the Bulldogs from their last meeting as they, too, seek their first win of the season.
The 17 and under match-up will be the pick of the games, with big consequences for the winner. Both Square and Maryborough are separated by just half a game, and while the Magpies’ run home will be difficult, with the remainder of the top five included in their last five games, a win will propel them into third position.
They will need to turn around a 13-goal loss from their last meeting, however.
