NEWSTEAD (40) def by HARCOURT (43)
Harcourt held out a second-half Newstead charge to firm for a finals spot, winning by three goals.
With games against top four teams Lexton, Avoca and Natte Bealiba to finish the season, Harcourt’s win allows them to sit two games clear of Navarre with three games left, to at least give themselves some breathing space if they are unable to win those final three games.
Harcourt made a good start by scoring 15 goals to nine to open up a six goal lead, and were able to maintain it throughout the second quarter in a goal-for-goal affair which saw both teams score 11 goals.
Newstead started to make their move in the third quarter, and whittled down the margin, but could only take two goals out of the Lions’ lead, scoring 13 goals to 11.
It was a similar story in the last quarter as the Kangaroos continued to ask questions of the Harcourt defensive unit, but could only make up one goal.
Tegan McKay scored 29 goals for the victorious Lions, while Kate Blake added 14 goals.
For Newstead, Verity Gartside kept them in the contest with 31 goals.
