At a meeting of council late last month, councillors endorsed the draft local laws for community feedback.

Under the Local Government Act, council is required to review local laws every 10 years.

Designed to protect public and private spaces, health and safety, local laws empower council to respond to local issues to address these matters.

Local laws covers a diverse range of topics across three areas — roads and public places, environment and animals and livestock.

Based on community feedback the draft local law includes a number of changes and additions.

These range from laws around fireworks, commercial waste and shopping trolleys to dilapidated buildings, burning in the open air and animal keeping.

Central Goldfields Shire mayor Liesbeth Long said the updated draft local laws were developed to reflect local issues and address the emerging needs of the community.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide valuable input during the initial community consultation stage,” she said.

“Local laws are there for the community to be able to enjoy our wonderful shire and surroundings.

“They help keep our community not only safe, but also content, by giving council the authority to do something about unwanted issues when they happen.

“This can be such things as unsightly yards, burning off, excessive noise but also how many animals are permitted on people’s properties.

“Our updated local laws will be in place for the next 10 years, which is a long time, so it’s really important to make sure we have it right.

“Now is your chance to review the new laws that have been introduced, removed and amended to ensure that we have a local law that meets the needs of the community over the next decade.”

Community members are invited to review the updated draft local laws and provide feedback until 3 pm on Friday, August 30.
