TALBOT 16.5 (101) def NEWSTEAD 11.2 (68)

Talbot took a crucial victory against Newstead, which keeps their top eight hopes alive in a game where both teams showcased their accurate goalkicking.

The Hawks were able to get out to a flyer, kicking four goals to three in the first term to open up an eight-point lead at the first change.

However, a high-octane second quarter had Talbot Recreation Reserve rocking, as they were able to pile on seven goals to three to extend the lead to 31 points at the main change.

To Newstead’s credit, they were able to stop the momentum and play some superb football of their own to roar back into the contest, kicking five goals to just one behind to set up a grandstand finish, with the margin just two points at the final change.

But Talbot were determined to keep their season alive, and with everything on the line, they kicked five goals to no score in the last to eventually run out 33-point winners.

The result means that the Hawks sit just one game outside the top eight, and will need to reprise their thrilling victory over Navarre in 2022 next week to stand any chance of returning to the finals.

Adam Scott and Matthew Bond formed a devastating one-two punch up forward, combining for 10 goals, with Scott’s six goals enough to see him named best on ground for the Hawks. Alongside him, Jayson Atkins, Alex Marshall, Sam Hitchings, Kallan Boucher and Darcy Osborne were also named in the best.

For Newstead, they now face a crunch game against Lexton next week, with both teams looking to secure their finals spot. Angus Mayes, Anthony Robins, Harrison Harbrow, Joel Smith, Zane Ashby and Oscar Lynzaat were all named in their best players.
