Rain was the theme of 2022 — Maryborough recorded its highest yearly rainfall in 12 years and its second wettest October ever, while it was Australia’s ninth-wettest year on Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) record.
The Bureau released its brief summary of Australia’s climate in 2022 last week, finding 2022 was wetter and warmer than average for the nation.
While rainfall was high, the country also recorded its equal 22nd warmest year since national records began 112 years ago in 1910.
Maryborough recorded a total 791.3 mm of rain during 2022 — the highest on record since 2010 (952.1 mm).
The bulk of the rain, as expected, came during October when 168.2 mm fell causing flooding across the region — the highest October rain since 1975 (195 mm) and the second highest since records began.
The highest 2022 daily rainfall according to the BOM was on October 14 (36.2 mm).
August had the second highest total with 109.4 mm followed by November with 101 mm.
Victoria overall recorded 872.70 mm rainfall in 2022, as an area average across the state, which is 31.6 percent above average.
It was the fifth-wettest year on record and the highest rainfall since 1974.
While there were warm days in Maryborough there were no record-breaking temperatures in 2022 — the hottest month in Maryborough was January, with the highest temperature for the year recorded on January 1 (38°).
The coolest month was June with an average temperature of 12.3°, however the coldest day was on May 30 when the mercury plummeted to 8.4°.
