The fourth round of midweek pennant was played on Tuesday, with all four games going the way of the higher-ranked team.

Highland Tartan defeated a gallant Newstead 78-44.

Tartan may have taken all 16 competition points, but they didn’t have it all their own way as a competitive Newstead took it right up to the ladder leaders on two of the three rinks.

Leanne Wallis’ 32-13 win over Mark Leckey, however, gave them the break they desired, and Andrew Brumby went on with the job, defeating David Cobden 22-14. Greg Shay finished off the job with a 24-17 win over Graeme Lipback.

The reigning champions, Dunolly Blue, sit just two points behind on the ladder, having ruined Carisbrook’s big day with a 90-32 win.

It was the first game played at the revamped Carisbrook Bowling Club, but Dunolly Blue took an immediate liking, finishing up with the biggest score of the season so far.

Tony Galofaro defeated Denise Matic 26-11, while Barry Mortlock had a dominant morning in defeating Eric Symons 36-11. Alan Weir finished off the job by defeating Phillip Burt 28-10.

Talbot moved up to fourth on the ladder after taking care of Highland Gold 72-44.

While the game was largely competitive, Robert Jackson’s 32-11 win over Jeanette Oliver helped split the two teams, and Talbot took a clean sweep, with Ray Prentice defeating Dennis Prosser 21-19, and Barb Crossley defeating Adrian Masterman-Smith 19-14.

Avoca kept in touch with the top four with a big win over Dunolly Gold, doubling their score by winning 82-41.

Daniel Giddings got things started with a strong 21-11 win over Frank Mifsud on rink one, while Ann Loosmore defeated James Smith 27-7 in a dominant rink two display. In a high-scoring third rink, Loralee Field defeated Jim Haigh 34-23 to give Avoca all 16 competition points.

An intriguing fifth round awaits on Tuesday. Highland Tartan meets Maryborough Golf in a meeting between the ladder leaders and a Golf team who have been impressive in their opening two games, while coming off the round four bye.

Dunolly Blue face Newstead, who would have taken some confidence out of providing a competitive outing against Tartan, despite going down by 34 shots.

Talbot could take third on the ladder if they are able to defeat Carisbrook and Maryborough Golf lose to Highland Tartan. With a 60-shot loss and two 58-shot losses to open their season, Carisbrook will be hoping to improve.

Highland Gold and Dunolly Gold will be looking to move clear from the bottom three of the ladder when the two meet at Dunolly.

Avoca will have the bye.
