Mount Alexander Shire Council is asking residents for feedback on how it can improve access and inclusion for people with disabilities in the shire.
Council launched the community consultation on Friday, December 2 at an event to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability.
Council is looking for input from people living with a disability, people caring for someone with a disability, service providers, community members, and people who have specialist knowledge or interest in disability issues.
People are encouraged to consider topics such as ease of access to council places and spaces, barriers to participation, and areas council can focus on to build a more inclusive and connected community.
Feedback provided will inform council’s new draft Disability Action Plan, which will guide future improvements to council services and facilities, and produce actions that address barriers people with disability experience in participating in community life.
The plan will also align with the Disability Act 2006 and the Inclusive Victoria — Disability Action Plan 2022-2026.
Mount Alexander Shire mayor Rosie Annear said community input was vital in ensuring the plan accurately reflected residents’ needs.
“Council is co-designing this plan in partnership with our Disability Action Plan Working Group”, she said.
“The group includes residents who are living with disability and their carers, and support providers.
“Their input, along with the wider community, will help us make a more accessible place for people of all abilities.”
